The following sections each focus on purifying the negativities that you may have accumulated by breaking your ethical commitments. You should now recite the sections that correspond to the vows that you have taken. If you have not taken a particular set of vows, then you should skip over those sections.

Purification of Pratimoksha Vows

U HU LA!

To the Lama Vajradhara and all the Buddhas of the ten directions, please pay attention to me!

From beginningless time until now, I confess all my non-virtuous actions of body, speech and mind because of afflictions of attachment, aversion and ignorance, ten non-virtues, five heinous crimes and five related negativities, downfalls of the Vinaya vows, unfulfilled Bodhisattva pledges, and non-commitment to my Tantric samaya. I confess all disrespect and lack of appreciation for my parents, teachers and so on. I confess displeasing spiritual masters, spiritual Sangha and Dharma brothers and sisters. I confess all wrong actions which displeased the Three Jewels; abandoning Dharma, slandering the holy Sangha and harming any sentient beings. I confess all non-virtues done by myself or that supported the non-virtues done by others. I confess any negative actions which were obstacles to virtuous rebirth and the path to enlightenment or caused the suffering of samsara, especially the lower realms.

In the presence of the Lama Vajradhara and all the Buddhas of the ten directions, I am ashamed and regretful. I confess and promise not to repeat these wrong-doings. This is the solution for me to reach true liberation from samsara; there is no other way.

Rest for a moment in the determination to not repeat these actions.

Purification of the Bodhisattva Pledges

I confess the four black dharmas according to the Bodhisattva pledges. I confess to deceiving and displeasing Dharma Teachers; I confess to discouraging others from practicing virtuous actions, and causing them to regret those virtuous actions which they have already done; I confess to abusing or slandering Bodhisattvas with anger or hatred; I confess to having ulterior motives—motives other than the pure unselfish wish to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all living beings.

I will practice the four white dharmas which are opponents to the four black dharmas and are actions which produce positive karmic results: I will abandon consciously telling lies; I shall be unbiased and help all living beings in their Dharma practice without having any selfish motives; I shall recognise all living beings as Buddhas, never seeking their faults; I shall cultivate responsibility within myself to lead all living beings to enlightenment.

OM AMOGHA SHILA SAMBHARA | BHARA BHARA | MAHA SHUDDHA SATTVA PADMA VIBHU SHITA BHUJA | DHARA DHARA SAMANTA | AVOLOKITE HUM PHET SVAHA (3x)

Recite this mantra at least three times or as many times as you like. As you recite, strengthen your resolve to achieve enlightenment for the benefit of others.

Purification of the Fourteen Tantric Commitments

To the pervasive Buddha Vajrasattva, please pay attention to me!

I confess my ignorance, disrespect and uncontrollable afflictions: I disturbed the mind of the Vajra Master; acted wrongly against the Dharma; held aversion towards my vajra brothers and sisters; lost the altruistic thought and secret inner flow; lacked understanding of spirituality; revealed the secret Dharma; had impure perceptions of the aggregates and had doubts regarding the profound; was insincere, judgemental and intellectually arrogant towards the profound meanings; lacked understanding of skilful means; was sceptical, held an incorrect view and lacked understanding of female qualities. I confess any impure perceptions of these fourteen samayas. I confess all breaches of samaya related to the body, speech and mind of the Vajra Master. I confess all breaches of samaya related to the general and particularly the five Buddha families. I confess all breaches of samaya related to the root and branches of Vajrayana. I sincerely and with great moral shame confess any wrong perception of my Vajra Samaya. May the power of this confession purify any gross and subtle levels of obscurations. May I continue towards the indestructible Vajra Path and may I reach the seven unions of Vajradhara-hood in this single life.

OM VAJRASATTVA SAMAYA MANU PALAYA | VAJRASATTVA TENOPA TITHA DRIDHO ME BHAWA | SUTO KHAYO ME BHAWA | ANURAKTO ME BHAWA | SUPO KHAYO ME BHAWA | SARVA SIDDHI ME PRAYATSA | SARVA KARMA SU TSAME | TSIT TAM SHRIYAM KURU HUM | HA HA HA HA HO | BHAGAVAN SARVA TATHAGATA VAJRA MAME MUNTSA | VAJRA BHAVA MAHA SAMAYA SATTVA AH HUM (3x)

Recite this mantra at least three times, then rest your awareness in the certainty that your mind is primordially pure and free from all negativities.
